Weekly Workshops

At the CraftWorks we have a programme of weekly workshops that happen every week. Everyone is welcome.

These are social workshops that last about 2 hours each but we do go on longer if time allows. They are designed to give you the opportunity to try new things and then develop those skills at your own pace or bring along a project you have already started. These workshops run alongside our more structured programmes and our masterclasses.

We have all kit available including a variety of sewing machines, spinning wheels, looms, carders etc and some fabrics, wool and raw fleece but please feel free to bring your own if you would like to.

We are currently closed on Mondays.

Spinning is a wonderfully social and relaxing craft to learn. We have lots of raw fleece and 7 spinning wheels at the CraftWorks ranging from simple beginner set ups to more technical and much faster wheels. If you have one of your own please feel free to bring it along. The group is learning to spin yarn in different thicknesses from skinny lace yarns to thick art yarns and how to ply different ones together incorporating different beads through to dolls heads. The group is very friendly and is always keen to meet new friends who want to enjoy the alchemy of turning fleece into yarn.

Weaving for Beginners 10 am – 12pm

Weaving is another age old craft that can create simple fabrics or technical pieces akin to artwork. In these sessions we’ll look at the terms used in weaving and debunk the set up process. We’ll explore warps and wefts, how to make different ones in different ways from wild weaving to counting threads and colours for pattern work. We’ll make our own simple looms from household waste and learn to use table looms and hand looms of different sizes, from a 4 shaft to a spectacular 13 feet wide 16 shaft blanket loom and our wonderful Hattersley Domestic if you are brave enough.

The Knit and Knatterer’s 1 pm – 3 pm

At the CraftWorks we love knitting. This group is open to everyone from beginners who’ve never held needles before to the more experienced. We can teach basic to complex to stitches, how to sort out problems as they occur, how to read a pattern and how to make one of your own or just come and knit. We also knit with everything we can so there is the opportunity to learn how to make ‘yarn’ from tee shirts or jeans or any thing else you have lying around. We make needles from our fingers, hands and arms through to broom sticks and gate posts. Within the group you can also join our ‘guerilla’ yarn bombers determined to brighten Torbay with lots of anonymous knitting.

Again these are old skills that can be used to make amazing textiles either by hand or using machines, with patterns or experiment and work freely. At the CraftWorks we have a collection of fabric off cuts, interesting clothing and vintage materials to use in your creations. Make quilts or throws, cover furniture or make or enhance clothes with different techniques. No previous experience of sewing or crafting is needed so come and see us and get creative.
